While I agree with you that they are both weaving, it’s a different sort of weaving.

I believe it’s technically a circular loom, as it makes a flat sheet with strands that are continuous from one side to the other and cross over/under other stands , the sheet just happens to be a tube. A braid implies a multiple-stranded cord.
